Morgan Stanley Smith Barney Launches Perspectives in Philanthropy, Vol. 5, "Medical Philanthropy and Global Healthcare"

Feb 14, 2011

Showcasing clients who are transforming passion into actions that benefit others

New York —

Morgan Stanley Smith Barney is pleased to announce the publication of its latest issue of Perspectives in Philanthropy, a quarterly journal that redefines charitable giving in meaningful and effective ways.  The theme of this issue is medical philanthropy and global healthcare.

The lead article tells the story of Hunter Kelly, son of former NFL player Jim Kelly and his wife, Jill, who might be alive today if he had received a heel prick at birth to detect Krabbe's Disease, a rare genetic disorder.  The Kelly's founded Hunter's Hope Foundation, an organization that advocates for comprehensive newborn screening programs in all fifty states.  Another article, written by Patrick Donohue in the form of a letter to his daughter, Sarah Jane, describes how a baby nurse shook Sarah Jane so violently that she suffered brain damage.  As a way of helping Sarah Jane and other infants like her with brain injuries, Donohue founded the Sarah Jane Brain Foundation.

"Like the Kelly's and Donohue, many of our clients have a passion that they'd like to transform into an actionable plan that benefits others.  That is exactly what we help them do," said Steven Rosandich, Vice President of Philanthropic Services, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney.

"The tax incentive for giving is secondary to many of our clients," reflected Melanie Schnoll Begun, Managing Director of Philanthropic Services, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney.  "Most are excited to work with us in defining their charitable interests, identifying nonprofits to collaborate with and creating  opportunities  for  involving children and other family members in  their charitable giving."
