Children’s Mental Health Innovation Awards

The Purpose of the Innovation Awards

Launched in 2021, the Morgan Stanley Alliance for Children's Mental Health Innovation Awards initiative aims to identify and fund mental healthcare solutions for children and young adults across the U.S. This program specifically addresses the lack of both private and public investment in children’s mental health and offers effective ways to connect innovative ideas with capital through seed funding, networking and capacity building opportunities.

The Morgan Stanley Alliance for Children’s Mental Health was created to fund and leverage solutions for what we believe is a serious and growing problem for the next generation. With the Innovation Awards, we hope to further this goal by identifying and advancing new, impactful ways to help address mental illness in children and young adults.
— Ted Pick, Chief Executive Officer of Morgan Stanley and Chair, Morgan Stanley Alliance for Children’s Mental Health Advisory Board

About the Program

WHAT APPLICANTS CAN EXPECT

The Morgan Stanley Alliance for Children’s Mental Health (the "Alliance") invites U.S.-based 501(c)(3) public charities to submit innovative ideas for advancing children’s mental health. Five selected winners have opportunities to:

  • Be awarded with a grant of $100,000.
  • Raise their profile and showcase their program.
  • Receive consultation and training from industry professionals.
  • Learn from peers and build powerful connections.

In response to the high volume of applications in previous years, we will expand the Innovation Awards to support more charities. Through a capacity building platform, select applicants will be invited to join expert-led and peer learning sessions, as well as networking opportunities, aimed to benefit small to mid-sized organizations.

ELIGIBILITY AND PROJECT SCOPE

We are looking for new or piloted projects from direct-service organizations that will help address the far-reaching challenges of stress, anxiety, depression or other mental health issues in children and young adults on a national or local level in the U.S. Projects must tackle specific issues and address unmet needs, with a goal of reducing stigma, increasing access to care, improving equity in mental health, enabling early identification/prevention or enhancing intervention, especially among disadvantaged and vulnerable populations. Organizations that are shortlisted for selection must agree to applicable terms and conditions in order to be eligible for final selection and awarding of any grants.

While all registered 501(c)(3) public charities based in the U.S. are eligible to apply to the program, it is focused primarily on those with an annual total revenue under $10 million. Applicants with an annual total revenue over $10 million must demonstrate why existing funds cannot be used to support the proposed initiative.

WINNER SELECTION CRITERIA

Applications are reviewed by an expert panel of judges and are evaluated based on the equally-weighted criteria below:

  • Innovation: Applications must present an innovative solution for addressing unmet needs in children's mental healthcare, especially among disadvantaged and vulnerable populations.
  • Expertise: Applications should outline executable services informed and/or delivered by mental health professionals, highlighting any related mental health expertise and evidence-based models that they employ.
  • Impact: Applications should offer measurable deliverables aimed at improving the state of mental wellbeing in children or young adults.
  • Potential: Applications will also be judged on the feasibility of replicating or scaling the proposed service to benefit children and young adults in broader communities.

KEY DATES FOR THIRD INNOVATION AWARDS

  • May 8, 2023: Applications open.
  • June 6, 2023: Briefing session.
  • July 14, 2023: Application deadline. Shortlisted applicants may be asked to submit additional information throughout the ensuing review process.
